The expert is someone who is recognized as a reliable source of knowledge, skill or ability in a particular area. Note the term “recognized as” rather than simply someone who is those things. There are genuine people who are knowledgeable and skilled in their field, who are not recognized as experts because no one knows who they are or what they do. Similarly there are “experts” out there who are seen as skilled and knowledgeable, but who may be a long way from the best in their field.
